As we gathered at a local Swiss native's home, we were immediately greeted with sweet smells and happy smiles. Our host was a sweetheart, and a true Swiss patriot. She shared many stories about the important impact Switzerland and Swiss culture have had on the world, of the connection with French, and best of all, of the delightful foods native to her homeland. We then enjoyed a lovely dinner of Raclette with potatoes and sausage, baked endive, grated carrot salad, and chocolate mousse. It was a night to remember.

Morocco Culture Night

hursday, February 2nd @ 6:30 p.m. - American Fork, Utah
February 2nd, 2012 was a night to remember! The AATF Officers put together a Soirée Québécoise and all were invited. This delightful evening was hosted by Shannon Magelby, a high school French teacher from Alpine School District. Several teachers and colleagues from Ogden to Provo met together at her home in American Fork to taste a variety of Québécois specialties, socialize and learn about this province.

When the teachers arrived, the table was filled with fun treats such as maple cookies, specialty cheeses, fruit and… what would be a Quebecois party without poutine?! There was plenty of poutine for all! (Poutine is an authentic dish made from French fries sprinkled with white cheese curds and covered in gravy.) Shannon had a table set up with books about the Carnaval au Québec, posters, flyers and recipes that the teachers could look through as they socialized and enjoyed the snacks.

As things settled down, Charlotte Van Wagenen, once a member of BYU’s Folk Dance ensemble, taught the participants La Bastringue, an authentic French Canadian mixer dance. There was lots of fun music and everybody seemed to have a great time participating. At the end of the night, Alphonse Turcotte, a special guest from Quebec, shared a few stories about his life in Francophone Canada and allowed for questions and answers. It was fun to hear his accent and learn from his experiences. This night was definitely one that will go along with the Quebec license plate: Je me souviens! Everyone who was present will remember the good times and lessons learned from that evening.
